Indexed ≠ Cited: We Measured the Gap for a Brand-New Domain
Key Takeaways
- We submitted 155 URLs via IndexNow (HTTP 200) and Bing's
site:operator returned result blocks for the domain — so the site is in the index. - Across 10 representative queries (8 category "best tools for X" + 2 direct brand searches), lxsaihub and every product name appeared 0 times.
- ~30+ distinct competitor entities were cited instead. The measured citation gap in our sample: 100%.
- Indexing is not acquisition. GEO — on-page structure plus off-page presence — is what moves a page from "stored" to "named" (Princeton GEO study).
For a micro-SaaS factory shipping dozens of niche tools, the temptation after launch is to watch the indexing dashboard and call it growth. We almost did. Then we asked a harder question: is anyone actually citing us? Because being in the index and being named in an answer are two completely different events — and for a new domain, the second one is the one that drives traffic.
Indexed vs cited, defined
A page is indexed when a search engine has stored it and can return it in a results list. It is cited when an AI answer engine — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Google’s AI Overviews — names and links it inside a synthesized response. Indexing is table stakes; citation is the actual acquisition event. A page can sit in the index for months and never be quoted once.
“Through rigorous evaluation, we demonstrate that GEO can boost visibility by up to 40% in generative engine responses.”
— Aggarwal et al. (2024), Generative Engine Optimization, Princeton University · arXiv:2311.09735
“For a one-person factory, a citation is worth more than a thousand indexed pages that no answer engine ever names. We measure citation, not just indexing.”
— LX AI (李星亮), founder of the LX Micro-SaaS Factory
The measurement
On 2026-09-11 we ran a brand-attribution sample: 10 queries resembling how a buyer asks an AI answer engine, plus 2 direct brand-name searches. We checked whether lxsaihub.com or any of our product names (RegexProof, GotoDeck, AIActRadar, AgentRedTeam, A11yGuard, SchemaSafe, SQLFix and the rest) appeared in the result or citation set. The queries were run through a web-answer surface that returns cited sources — a Perplexity-style proxy, since direct Perplexity API access was not available for this pass. Every result below is exactly what the surface returned.
| # | Query | Brand appeared? | Who got cited instead (sample) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | lxsaihub | NO | LUX AI HUB (Luxembourg), 鲁大师, Lxai (lxaihub.com Lisbon 2025), SkillHub (Anolis), Tencent SkillHub |
| 2 | LX AI micro-SaaS factory | NO | LinkedIn "AI Micro SaaS Factory"™, LX AI (Toolify/Levlex AI), LX CMD (layercommand), LexinFintech (LX) |
| 3 | best AI tools for EU AI Act compliance | NO | Speakeasy, Credo AI, IBM watsonx.governance, OneTrust, Holistic AI, Microsoft Purview, Vanta, Drata |
| 4 | AI agent red teaming tools | NO | PyRIT, Garak, DeepTeam, Promptfoo, PurpleLlama, Agentic Radar, Levo, TestMu |
| 5 | regex correctness checker AI prove regex is correct | NO | vinkius.com, aidevhub.io, Microsoft Rex, beantoolbox, startelio |
| 6 | SQL query fixer AI tool | NO | sqlai.ai, ai2sql.io, Text2SQL.ai, Outerbase, Supabase AI |
| 7 | JSON schema validator online tool | NO | starlighttools.org, jsontotable.net, browserutils.dev, jsonschemavalidator.net |
| 8 | accessibility audit AI tool WCAG | NO | accessiBe, AudioEye, UserWay, GetWCAG, wcag-accessibility-mcp |
| 9 | generative engine optimization GEO | NO | optimizegeo.ai, whoops, sonar-inc, citate, istis.sh.cn |
| 10 | GotoDeck one person company growth console | NO | OnDeck, GrowthDeck (github 0xBebis), venture-lab, getstacksmart |
Totals: 10 / 10 queries returned zero brand appearances; ~30+ distinct competitor entities were cited in their place. Measured citation gap in this sample: 100%.
Why the gap is not a typo
This is the expected state for a new domain, not a bug. Three things have to be true before an answer engine names you, and indexing is only the first:
- Index inclusion. The engine has stored your page. We have this: 155 URLs submitted via IndexNow (HTTP 200), Bing
site:returned result blocks. - Answer eligibility. Your page is structured so a model can extract and trust a claim — definition-lead H2s, statistics, quotations, freshness, FAQ schema. This is the on-page GEO work (rounds 1–5c).
- Citation authority. The engine believes you are the source to name. That comes from off-page signals — real backlinks, community presence (Reddit, Hacker News, YouTube), and entity disambiguation so "LX AI" resolves to us, not LexinFintech or a Lisbon startup.
We had step 1 and were mid-way through step 2. Step 3 was effectively zero — which is exactly why the sample came back empty. The data is the argument for off-page GEO, not against the launch.
What closes the gap
The fix is the same GEO loop we publish about, applied with the measurement as the scoreboard:
- Keep shipping on-page GEO assets (definition leads, quotations, FAQ schema) — that is rounds 1–5c, already live.
- Open the off-page channel: Build-in-Public posts on Reddit, a Show HN, YouTube walkthroughs, and accurate GitHub README attribution so the entity "LX Micro-SaaS Factory" resolves to our domain.
- Re-run this exact 10-query sample at 48h and 30 days. The first brand appearance in any query is the real launch metric — not the indexing count.
The honest headline is not "we failed to get cited." It is "we now have a falsifiable definition of success, and a baseline of 0 to beat." That is more useful than a vanity indexing number ever was.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between being indexed and being cited?
A page is indexed when a search engine has stored and can return it in a results list. It is cited when an AI answer engine (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews) names and links it inside a synthesized response. Indexing is table stakes; citation is the actual acquisition event.
Can a site be indexed but never cited?
Yes — and it is the default state for a new domain. In our 10-query sample, the domain was in the index (submitted via IndexNow, Bing returned result blocks) yet appeared in 0 answers or citation sets.
How do you close the indexed-but-not-cited gap?
Through GEO: on-page moves (definition-lead structure, statistics, quotations, freshness, FAQ schema) plus off-page moves (community presence on Reddit/HN/YouTube, real backlinks, entity disambiguation). Indexing alone never produces a citation.
